The assignment was to create an altarpiece for a recently restored Madrid basilica. It was decided that the centerpiece would be the Tabernacle, in the presence of Jesus in the Sacrament, and that it would be suspended in a cloud of light – expressing Lumen de lumine, Light from Light, as the Nicene Creed refers to God.
Thus the square void made in the brick wall of the apse, maximizing illumination, and the 1.20x1.20x1.20m cube of white translucent glazing, the greater part of which is exposed to the exterior to receive natural light. The leveling is done with laser rays, and the joining of translucent glass panes is executed with ultraviolet rays. At the center of this luminous structure, hanging in air, is the Tabernacle: a formal innovation in the liturgical space.
