Construction has officially begun on the Ehrhardt Museum, a space dedicated to photography and contemporary art in Plüschow, near the Baltic Sea. Covering an area of 1,400 square metres, the project has been spearheaded by Dr Jens Ehrhardt, son of artist Alfred Ehrhardt (1901–1984), together with his wife, Elke Weicht-Ehrhardt. The choice of Plüschow is no coincidence: the family has deep ties to this region of northern Germany, where it has its roots and wishes to strengthen local cultural life.
The new museum stands next to Schloss Plüschow, which currently houses an artists' residence and a gallery. Its design combines innovation and tradition, using regional materials and construction techniques such as wood and clay. A wooden pergola reinterprets traditional gabled forms, while a green roof integrates the building into the surrounding landscape.
At the centre is an 80-metre rammed earth wall, which defines the exhibition spaces and naturally regulates the interior humidity and temperature. The project will be the first cultural work in Germany by Francis Kéré and his studio Kéré Architecture, as well as his first museum in Europe. It is scheduled to open in late 2027.
