Tammela Stadium in Tampere

JKMM

The stadium is located in the center of the Tammela district of the Finnish city of Tampere, on the site of a 1930s football field. The facilities were much deteriorated. The decision was made to build anew on the same site and densify the urban area. An invitation-only competition was held in 2014 and the winner was JKMM Architects. Its scheme, titled Hattutemppu (Hat Trick), combined sports, housing, and commerce in a since block.

The complex covers almost 50,000 m² and is organized in eight interconnected plots that include a stadium with category-4 UEFA certification, five residential buildings counting 256 apartments, a shopping center, and parking. The stadium, with a total area of 13,500 m², offers sports facilities with capacity for 8,000 spectators.

The playing pitch is flanked by residential blocks to the east and west, clad in light-toned brick that evokes the architectural tradition of Tampere. These volumes open onto an urban space and are connected by a large swooping roof that is the most distinctive feature of the project. The asymmetrical roof, held up by concrete and steel columns with spans exceeding 100 meters, creates sloping stands at the highest edges of the stadium and additional seating areas with curved protections on the lower levels.

The stands rise directly from the edge of the field, with exposed-concrete finishes and glazed enclosures on the north and south sides, providing light, transparency, and protection from the wind. Acoustic strategies keep noise out of the homes during events. Each corner of the stadium features a leaning pillar with a base of reinforced concrete base and an upper branched section of prefabricated steel, which supports the roofs and transfers loads to the foundations, thereby preventing stress on the residential buildings. Thanks to its typological and urban innovation, the project is a candidate for the 2026 Mies van der Rohe Award.
