House II in a Quinta de Recreio, Sintra (Portugal)

Part of an agricultural estate classified as a ‘quinta de recreio,’ the building was abandoned for decades. It originally contained a winery and accommodations of people working on the property. It was broken up into various constructions connected by stairs, so had a dispersed layout.

Although it involved a major transformation into a single dwelling, the refurbishment respected the premises’ old mix of winery and home. The urban regulations in force forbade any alteration of the built volume, the facades, and the roof, so the perimeter walls were kept intact while the inside was gutted completely. A blue-pigmented concrete structure was constructed inside which rises from the basement, where the winery still us, and ascends via a helical staircase, forming the floor slabs of the upper levels.

The intervention altogether redefines the whole interior. On the ground floor, a large cleared space accommodates the kitchen, the dining room, and the main living room, arranged around the stairs. Above, the bedrooms are placed at the far ends, while the second sitting room has a central skylight that brings natural light into the heart of the building.
