When Clotilde García del Castillo decided to open up what had been her home to preserve the memory of her husband, little could she have imagined that a century later it would be crowded with people eager to see where Joaquín Sorolla had lived and worked. To compensate for the limitations of a building which, albeit a mansion, was not designed for public access, the museum has been expanded onto the adjacent plot, and the resulting new visitor route reinterprets three of the spaces that defined the painter’s family life: the studio, whose high attic-like ceilings replicate a sequence of rooms with overhead lighting; the Andalusian courtyard, now fitted in to connect with the new area; and the romantic garden, which stretches onto a green roof...[+]
