With an extensive and varied trajectory of visual, conceptual, and performance art behind her, Esther Ferrer did not shrink away when in 2024 she received the unique assignment of designing a medallion that would accompany the Tomás Francisco Prieto Prize, awarded by the Spain’s Royal Mint to celebrate an artistic career. This numismatic anecdote has also come in handy in presenting the exhibition ‘Pliegue y proceso’ – a journey through the creative universe of the San Sebastián-born artist, curated by Beatriz Martínez Hijazo and visitable at the institution’s headquarters in Madrid until 12 April. It brings together Ferrer’s space models, vibrant mathematical series, time-split self-portraits, and a complete record of all her performances. All of these are fragments of a continuous practice in which the process is equal in importance to the result, and which enables her, at eighty-eight years of age, to remain curious, thoughtful, and provocative.
