The new headquarters of the financial company JPMorganChase in Manhattan at 270 Park Avenue has had its grand opening. Rising 423 meters and 60 floors, it is now New York City’s sixth-tallest edifice, adding to the Big Apple’s architectural history.
On the site of the old Union Carbide Building, a 1960s SOM work, the new office tower will accommodate 10,000 employees and has a distinctive sculptural presence with its innovative structure. A result of a 2018 competition, it presents a series of levels that retracts progressively, forming a dynamic stepped profile. Addressing the site’s restrictions, for the ground floor and up Foster + Partners developed a structural system based on columns in a fan arrangement and triangular bracings that maximize the supertall construction’s stability and efficiency.
Foster + Partners designed the tower, while other practices, including SOM and Gensler, equipped and designed the offices and various other indoor spaces. The British firm also took on the design and equipping of the main foyer and the upper lever, including bespoke furniture. In the foyer, the flags created by Norman Foster will always wave thanks to an artificial breeze, while the light-toned travertine floor has a brightening effect.
The project stands out for its focus on the environment: 97% of the previous building’s structural materials have been recycled or reused, and the triple-layer glass maximizes energy efficiency.
