Bridge between Dilsen-Stokkem and Maasmechelen

In the Belgian province of Limburg, Cycling Between Terrils is a 400-meter floating bridge that snakes its way between two imposing terrils, heaps of waste resulting from old coal mining activity, now transformed into natural spaces. This unique passageway for cyclists and walkers connects the municipalities of Dilsen-Stokkem and Maasmechelen, crossing an artificial lake formed by gravel extraction.

The design by BuroLandchap took inspiration from the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Section, blending harmoniously with the surroundings. The S-shape makes bikers slow down and enjoy the views of the Hoge Kempen National Park.

Built with thirty hinged modules, the bridge adapts to water-level variations of up to 130 centimeters. These elements are connected by flexible joints and anchored to the bottom of the lake through steel piles, allowing the structure to move with the fluctuations without losing stability. The bridge’s concrete base of concrete and polystyrene ensures it can float.
