Xiao Feng Art Museum, Hangzhou (China)
ZAO / Zhang Ke Architecture Office

Nestled in a rugged landscape, this museum dedicated to the painters Xiao Feng and Song Ren is located at the foot of the Daci Mountain, in the Xihu district of Hangzhou. Built with concrete colored with black ink and processed on site, the building snakes organically and engages in dialogue with the natural environment. Walking under a bridge, visitors reach the entrance through an inner courtyard, which gives the premises an introspective mood.

The exhibition route follows the circular form of the building, which narrows here and widens there and there to occasionally open out to the expterior space. Gently sloping ramps connect the different levels and allow one to experience the space from various heights. The geometry breaks up toward the courtyard through protruding boxes that open up with large windows. With a built area of 1,298 m², the museum unfolds like a sculptural ensemble of raised galleries, which reinforce the balance between mass and void, contention and openness. From above, it is perceived as a precise incision in the green landscape.
