Rising on a previously vacant lot, on slightly sloping ground, the new municipal market hall is a key piece in restructuring the urban fabric and revitalizing community life. The building takes on a clear, recognizable presence without imposing itself on its surroundings. It is conceived as an open shelter in the city, accessible and timeless, capable of accommodating changing uses.
The design is based on the legacy of ephemeral urban installations that have always open-air life. This idea translates into architecture expressed through minimal use of materials, with the expertise of local artisans and enterprises. Concrete is used for the floors and the annexed volumes, while wood defines the structure, cladding, frames, and roofing. Technical solutions and assemblages are left visible, ensuring durability as well as making elements easy to repair and adaptable to future needs.
The sloping roof is composed of staggered strips of untreated larchwood, reinforcing the sober and honest character of the premises. The scissor-like arrangement of the posts and cross beams softens the visual perception of the supporting and stabilizing elements. At the same time, the alternation of the timber trusses puts rhythm and variety into the structural repetition.
Contrasting with this lightness, the annexes are presented as monolithic boundaries in continuity with the concrete pavement. These volumes incorporate windows, both fixed and movable, with frames made of panels of untreated wood. The building is set back on two sides to create an esplanade opening out to the main street and to a narrow alleyway connecting with an inner courtyard. On the other sides, the widening of the volume allows for enclosed service areas, completing a balanced and functional ensemble.
