This student centre has recently been inaugurated at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Designed by Danish firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) in collaboration with New York-based Rockwell Group, which was responsible for the interior design, the complex consists of 29 wooden pavilions that adapt to the natural slope of the land, rising in a staggered pattern.
The building is named after Michael R. Bloomberg, a prominent Johns Hopkins alumnus, businessman and former mayor of New York. With a total area of 14,000 square metres spread over four floors, the centre brings together in one place the academic, social and cultural activities of students, which were previously scattered across the campus.
The rectangular volumes of solid wood and glass are arranged on different levels and crowned with flat roofs that house nearly 1,000 solar panels, capable of generating approximately half of the electrical energy consumed by the building.
Inside, a large central atrium connects the different areas of the complex, which include an auditorium for 250 people, meeting and study rooms, as well as spaces for student associations.
