The spatial and volumetric planning of this dwelling comes from an intimate engagement with the surroundings. Its design establishes a sequence of layers that go progressively from privacy to openness. A work of the Australian firm led by the architect Mel Bright, it is located on the outskirts of Melbourne and designed as a simple single-story construction that redefines the boundary between architecture and nature.
The identity of the project stems from a metal structure covered with climbing vegetation, which mediates between interior and exterior, and the interspersed concrete walls that articulate the spaces. The lattice of deciduous plants, where vines intertwine, filters light and wind, acts as solar protection, and changes in character through the seasons, giving shade in summer and disappearing in winter.
To reinforce the connection with the landscape and take advantage of the northern light, the main volume extends from east to west along the site’s southern edge. A perpendicular axis organizes the livable spaces, which open out to the garden through large sliding doors. The bedrooms are arranged efficiently, connected by a corridor that incorporates desks, lit by large windows that frame the natural surroundings.
