A story that cannot be verified tells of how, as a young boy, Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav read aloud some of his verses in Hungarian to his mother, a simple peasant woman, who, not understanding a single word, burst into tears. Whereupon the writer, despite having been raised and educated in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary, decided to use only his maternal Slovak tongue, and he would eventually become one of Slovakia’s national poets. A small municipal library now named after him spreads across three adjoining houses, with the central one used for reading rooms. In these, metal shelving systems – on the double-height ground floor and suspended from beams – are arranged in consideration of the windows in order not to block natural light, and the fine detailing ensures that users’ perception of the huge spaces is not spoiled.
