What makes Benidorm so different, so appealing? For Martin Parr, who died on 6 December, this middle-class paradise was an inexhaustible source of subjects, equally everyday and kitsch, that he immortalized with saturated tones and a good dose of irony. At a time when serious practice was still in black and white, the British photographer ventured into color and popularized using the flash in broad daylight; a personal take on commercial methods that created a documentary style which was unique and never boring. A member of the agency Magnum and its president from 2013 to 2017, he returned to the urb on Spain’s Mediterranean coastline for his best-known series, but also brought his gaze to other hubs of mass tourism and global consumerism, without overlooking the social disparities existing in his own isles.
